He watched his father mow the lawn, a rhythmic back-and-forth that grated on his already frayed nerves. The relentless buzz of the machine seemed to amplify the internal pressure. The summer heat was oppressive, but he couldn't bring himself to move, even to the shade. His mother called from the kitchen. "Help me with the groceries, David?" He pushed himself up, each step an excruciating effort. He looked at the sky, a vast, indifferent canvas. The idea of responsibility now felt heavy.
